Hamels Continues to Struggle, Phillies Fall to Marlins 6-1

Phillies ace Cole Hamels didn’t take the loss Wednesday night, but he really didn’t do much in the way of helping the Phillies earn a win either. With the “aid” of what some might call a tight strike zone, Hamels began to face location problems in the second inning and would through 106 pitches (only 67 for strikes) in six innings of work. Though he’d leave with the game tied at 1-1 to begin the seventh, the one run he allowed came on his own error at first base on a throw from Chase Utley on a ground ball deep in the hole. Hamels would allow three walks and five hits in his six innings. He didn’t get any offensive support to speak of – Cody Asche’s home run in the second inning (his second of the season) – would be the lone run the Phillies would score in the game.

The wheels came off for Philadelphia completely following Hamels’ departure when Adeiny Hechavarria reached first on an infield single, stole second and later scored when reliever Luis Garcia balked him home. An error by Phillies center fielder Odubel Herrera plated three more runs for the Marlins in the eighth (they’d also add a fourth in the frame on a Martin Prado double.
