GAME RECAP

PHILADELPHIA — Dave Bolland scored the winning goal in the sixth round of the shootout to help the Florida Panthers defeat the Philadelphia Flyers 2-1 on Thursday at Wells Fargo Center.

Brandon Pirri also scored in the shootout. Roberto Luongo made 25 saves in regulation and overtime, and then denied five of six Flyers shooters in the shootout.

The win was the 385th of Luongo’s career, tying him with Mike Vernon for 12th all-time.

Scottie Upshall scored in the first period for the Panthers (14-8-8), who won their second straight shootout following their NHL-record 20-round shootout win Tuesday against the Washington Capitals.

It was the 10th one-goal game for the Panthers in their past 11, their 22nd in 30 games this season (12-2-8). They are 4-4 in shootouts.

Jakub Voracek scored for the Flyers and also had their only goal of the shootout. Goaltender Steve Mason made 31 saves in regulation and overtime, and then denied four of six Panthers shooters in the shootout.

The Flyers (11-14-6) are 0-5 in shootouts and have lost 10 straight; their last win in the tiebreaker was Dec. 30, 2013.

Philadelphia had the better of play in overtime, outshooting the Panthers 4-2, but Luongo made a nice glove stop on Mark Streit with 1:32 left and gloved a Matt Read slap shot with 41.2 seconds left. He also made a nice glove stop on anAndrew MacDonald shot off a 4-on-2 Flyers rush with 10 seconds left.

Each team had chances in a scoreless third period.

The Panthers’ best chance came midway through the period when Pirri had a chance from the left post, but Mason gloved it aside. Pirri was a late addition to the lineup in place of Brad Boyes, who was scratched because of an upper-body injury.

The Flyers’ best chance came late in the period when Luke Schenn stepped into a loose puck on the right side, but Luongo stopped it.

Philadelphia tied the game with the only goal of the second period.

Pierre-Edouard Bellemare got the puck along the wall on the right side of the ice, cut wide on Panthers defenseman Brian Campbell and carried the puck behind the Florida net. He lost it but got it back and fed an open Voracek at the hash marks. Voracek’s one-timer beat Luongo at 4:07 for his 12th goal.

The Panthers led 1-0 after one period on Upshall’s fourth goal. Tomas Kopecky raced around Flyers defenseman Braydon Coburn into the Philadelphia zone along the left side. Mason stopped his shot, but Upshall got inside position on Flyers defenseman Nick Schultz and the rebound went off his chest and in. The goal was upheld after video review.

Florida thought it had the game’s first goal, at 5:12 of the first, when Sean Bergenheim tipped a high shot by defenseman Dylan Olsen past Mason. Referees immediately waved off the goal, ruling Bergenheim played the puck with his stick above the crossbar. A replay review upheld the no-goal call.
