A Prospectus on the Phillies’ New Prospects

According to multiple sources, the Philadelphia Phillies have parted ways with ace Cole Hamels, sending him to the Texas Rangers for five minor league prospects (including three of the organization’s top five). Also included in the deal are Phils’ reliever Jake Diekman and Rangers’ starting pitcher Matt Harrison, who has spent most of the last three seasons hampered by back injuries. Harrison is essentially a salary dump for Texas, which might make one wonder why the Phillies would find themselves in a position to eat the salary of an injured player. However, the bigger story is that the prospect-heavy return is considered a valid haul – despite the inherent risks that all prospects carry. Most notably moving to Philly in the deal is slugging outfielder Nick Williams, a 21-year-old who was drafted in the second round out of high school in 2012.
