Union Tops New York in U.S. Open Quarters

Report From Philadelphia Union

Harrison N.J. – The Philadelphia Union defeated the New York Red Bulls in the Quarterfinals of the U.S. Open Cup in a penalty shootout on Tuesday evening. After Conor Casey received a straight red card in the 40th minute for a foul on Conor Lade, the Union went down to 10 men. Despite being one less, the Union took the lead in the 56th minute with Eric Ayuk scoring from Vincent Nogueria´s assist. The Union withstood the strong offensive pressure from the Red Bulls until the fourth minute of added time when Lloyd Sam found the back of John McCarthy’s net. After both teams failed to score in extra time, the game went to penalties. Fernando Aristeguieta scored the final penalty to secure the victory for the visiting side. The Union return to action on July 26 to face D.C. United in RFK Stadium.
