Offense Waits too Long to Support Eickhoff, Mets Beat Phillies Again

Phillies rookie Jerad Eickhoff had a forgettable first first inning at Citizens Bank Park Wednesday night against the visiting Mets, but would eventually settle in to throw six innings with only three earned runs allowed – all of which came in the opening inning. However, a Phillies offense that has been surprisingly stout against New York’s pitching staff throughout the series didn’t get on the board until the eighth, by which point a struggling bullpen had made its contributions to a 6-0 lead at that point. A four-run frame made things interesting for the Phils heading into the ninth before the bullpen would allow yet another three runs in an eventual 9-4 loss, which went to Eickhoff. Three errors by the Phillies didn’t help matters. For more on this game, click here.
