Utley, Hernandez & Herrera Spark Phils to 4-2 Win Over Padres

Chase Utley collected two hits and two runs scored out of the leadoff spot Saturday night; Cesar Hernandez contributed two hit, one run, and an RBI out of the No. 2 spot; and Odubel Herrera played like an overall maniac to lead the Phillies to a 4-2 win in San Diego. Utley’s double to start the ballgame helped build an early 1-0 lead when Hernandez moved him to third on a groundout and Herrera followed with a single to centerfield. Herrera then took to the base paths, stealing second off Padres starter Tyson Ross and then proceeding to “advance” to third on Maikel Franco’s ground ball out to shortstop Clint Barmes. With Ryan Howard, who eventually walked, at the plate, Herrera then scooted home on what was ruled a wild pitch but never got too far from the batter’s box. Herrera’s headfirst slide into home plate eluded a diving tag-out attempt by Ross and gave the Phillies a 2-0 edge. With the Phillies clinging to a 3-2 lead in the sixth, Utley hit his second double of the game with one out and nobody on. Hernandez followed with a triple to right field for the insurance run. Adam Morgan earned his third win of the season by throwing six strong with only one earned run allowed. Ken Giles picked up his fifth save. For more on this game, click here.
