Union Snaps Winless Streak With 4-0 Win Over Revolution

Report From Philadelphia Union

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Philadelphia Union earned a result on the road for the second consecutive week after a 4-0 victory over New England Revolution on Saturday night in front of a crowd of 17,127 at Gillette Stadium. The win gives Philadelphia 34 points on the season (9-8-7). The Union are back in action this Saturday when they host Toronto FC.

Philadelphia started the match perfectly as C.J. Sapong gave the Union a 1-0 lead in the second minute of play. The play was created by Fabinho who dribbled down the near sideline, most of the Revolution defense stopped as the ball stayed on the line. Fabinho sent in a centering cross that found the foot of Sapong who came streaking into the box and found the back of the net.

The Union kept momentum in the match in the 19th minute thanks to their MLS All-Star goalkeeper Andre Blake. New England’s Diego Fagundez sent in a missile of a shot that looked destined to tie the match at one. Blake was able to jump towards his left and extend his arm to deflect the ball away and keep the Philadelphia lead.

Chris Pontius continued his excellent form with his team-leading 10th goal of the season in the 51st minute to extend the Union lead to 2-0. The goal was set up as Ilsinho earned possession in the box after a deflection. Ilsinho danced his way around Revolution defenders in the box, but the ball was deflected towards Pontius who became the ultimate opportunist and delivered his fourth goal in his last five matches to extend the Union lead to 2-0.

Philadelphia extended their lead to 3-0 thanks to the head of Richie Marquez. The Union earned a corner which led to Tranquillo Barnetta sending in his attempt that found the head of Keegan Rosenberry, whose ball bounced off the back of Pontius and found the head of Richie Marquez who then beat Revs goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth to give Philadelphia the 3-0 lead.

Charlie Davies made his first appearance against the Revolution since being traded on Aug. 3 in the 83rd minute and helped put the finishing touches on a perfect night. Davies earned his first assist as a member of the Union as Roland Alberg delivered a laser to the back of the net in stoppage time to secure the 4-0 win.

The Union will return to action this weekend when they return home to Talen Energy Stadium to host Sebatsien Giovinco and Toronto FC. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and will be televised on The Comcast Network.
