Union Signs Goalie Jake McGuire

Report From Philadelphia Union

CHESTER, Pa. – Philadelphia Union have announced that they have signed goalkeeper Jake McGuire after selecting him off of waivers. Originally selected by the Houston Dynamo in the Second Round (30th overall) of the 2017 MLS SuperDraft, McGuire becomes the third goalkeeper on the Union’s roster.

“We were eager to take a look at Jake in training when we found out that he had become available, and we are excited to bring him aboard officially,” said Philadelphia Union Sporting Director Earnie Stewart. “Jake is a tall, athletic goalkeeper who excelled in college with Tulsa. We look forward to having him on the squad and anticipate him getting good experience with Bethlehem Steel FC this season.”

McGuire, 22, played for four seasons at Tulsa, where he was named to the NSCAA Third-Team All-East Region and the American Athletic Conference All-Tournament Team during his senior season. In total, he appeared in 67 games for the Golden Hurricane, tallying 17 shutouts.  Previously, McGuire spent time in the U.S. Youth National Team U-17 Residency Program and also was a member of the Chivas USA Academy.

While with Houston during the 2017 preseason, McGuire started a scrimmage against the Colorado Rapids (February 25), helping keep a clean sheet over 65 minutes of play. He also appeared in a friendly for Rio Grande Valley FC against the Dynamo in an intra-squad scrimmage (February 7).
