Stale 3rd Period Thwarts Flyers in 3-1 Loss to Islanders

Trailing 2-1 after the second intermission, the Philadelphia Flyers (7-10-5) managed just four shots on net in the third period during what would become a 3-1 loss in New York to the host Islanders (11-8-3). Claude Giroux scored his eighth goal of the season at the 3:59 mark of the first period off assists from Shayne Gostisbehere (two) and Jakub Voracek (11) to give the Flyers a short-lived 1-0 lead. The Isles’ Casey Cizikas beat Steve Mason and tied the game on a shorthanded score at 19:02. Kyle Okposo netted his fifth goal in the second period before Frans Nielsen added an empty-net goal late in the third.
