Sixers Roster Update: Glen Robinson III Claimed Off Waivers, Embiid Experiences Setback?

When Thomas Robinson was waived by the Denver Nuggets last month, the Sixers jumped on the opportunity to claim the former top-five pick and try to help him realize his massive potential. On Thursday, 2014 second-round selection Glenn Robinson III was waived by the Minnesota Timberwolves, the team again acted quickly.

On Saturday, the 21-year-old swingman was signed by the team off of waivers.

“[I’m] excited to have him,” said Sixers head coach Brett Brown We liked him and paid attention to him a lot in the draft. Part of the plan is identifying young people who can be keepers. He ticks a lot boxes, to it kind of being a no brainer on why we would be interested in him.”

Robinson appeared in 25 games for the Timberwolves this season, but saw just 101 total minutes (4.3 MPG) and never logged more than 12 in any one contest. With the Sixers, he should have an opportunity to earn major minutes over the final month of the season.

As a sophomore at Michigan last season, the 6’6” Robinson averaged 13.1 points (48.8 FG%, 30.6 3P%), 4.4 rebounds, and 1.2 assists in 32.3 minutes per game. He joins Jerami Grant as one of two players on the Sixers with a father who also once suited up for the team.

In other news, the Sixers are trying to downplay what many media outlets are describing as a “setback” for 2014 first-round draft pick Joel Embiid. According to numerous reports, Embiid has been seen walking around in a protective boot. Speculation is that he might have re-injured his surgically repaired right foot during dunks that were recently caught on video and posted by the 76ers on Vine.
