Flyers Slip From Wild Card Seeding With 4-3 Loss to Toronto

The Philadelphia Flyers (39-27-14) still hold their own destiny for making the 2016 playoffs, but things are now a little murkier following a 4-3 overtime loss to the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs (29-41-11) on Thursday night. By virtue of a 5-2 win over visiting Detroit, also on Thursday night, the Boston Bruins hold a one-point advantage in the standings for the second wild card. The Flyers do hold a game in hand and can clinch a playoff spot with at least five points in the standings over their two weekend games with Pittsburgh and the Islanders.

Trailing, 3-1, after two periods vs. Toronto, Philly rallied for two goals in the third to force overtime and collect a standings point on Thursday. Wayne Simmonds’ 30th goal of the season at 19:02 of the third got the game to OT before Toronto’s Jake Gardiner got the game winner at 2:51. Brayden Schenn (26) and Andrew MacDonald (one) also scored goals for Philly. Steve Mason took the loss in net, allowing four goals on 26 shots.
