Flyers Sign Top Draft Pick Provorov

Report From Philadelphia Flyers

The Philadelphia Flyers announced that they have signed 2015 First-Round draft pick, defenseman Ivan Provorov, to an entry-level contract, according to general manager Ron Hextall.

The 6’0”, 201’lb defenseman was selected seventh overall in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft on June 26 in Sunrise, Florida. He will join six other members of the Flyers 2015 Draft Class at next week’s Development Camp in Voorhees, NJ. The camp is free and open to the public.

In his rookie season with the Western Hockey League’s Brandon Wheat Kings, he averaged over a point per-game recording 61 points (15g-46a) in 60 games to lead all rookie defensemen in the WHL in scoring.

He also finished fourth overall among WHL defensemen in scoring, four points behind leading defenseman, and 2014 First-Round draft pick of the Flyers, Travis Sanheim.

In addition, Provorov led all rookie defensemen and ranked second among all rookies in scoring with 13 points (2g-11a) in the playoffs and helped lead the Wheat Kings to the WHL Finals.

Internationally, he was the youngest member of Russia’s silver medal-winning entry at the 2015 World Junior Championship, recording one assist and a plus-2 rating.

Provorov also played in the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl system in Russia before joining the Wilkes-Barre (Pa.) Knights in the Atlantic Youth Hockey League in 2011-12. In 2012-13 he posted 97 points (42g-55a) in 51 games to help the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights under-16 team win the national championship.
