11-Run Inning Leads Diamondbacks Past Phillies

It’s hard to believe that a team could have a one-run lead in what would eventually become a 13-1 loss. It’s also hard to believe that one pitcher could actually allow 11 runs in any one inning without “the benefit” of saying that some of those runs were the result of inherited runners given to the bullpen. But both scenarios played out for the Phillies last night in Arizona. David Buchanan surrendered 11 runs in the second inning – before getting out of the inning – and an early 1-0 lead was demolished en route to his seventh loss of the season in a performance that would see his ERA balloon to 9.00. Equally frightening was an injury to Maikel Franco, who left the game in the first inning after being hit flush on the wrist by a fastball from Diamondback starter Jeremy Hellickson, who would go on to earn the win by going eight innings and allowing just one unearned run on seven hits and zero walks. X-rays were reportedly negative. For more on this game, click here.
